School Records Fall on Day One of the ACC Championships

THE FLATS – A trio of school records fell on day one of the ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships on Monday, as the Yellow Jackets set new program record marks in the 200 medley relay, 800 free relay and the 200 free relay. Georgia Tech sits in 10th after day one of competition with a total of 90 points after three events.

In the men’s diving championships, the Yellow Jackets totaled 13 points after just one event in the 1-meter dive.

“I’m extremely happy with tonight. I think we started off extremely well, we broke three school records and moved up in the conference standings,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “I’m really looking forward to the rest of the meet. We’re going to come out and be aggressive tomorrow morning, just like we were tonight.”

Women’s Highlights

The Yellow Jackets got off to a quick start in the pool on Monday night, as the relay team of Maddie Paschal,Chiara Ruiu, Laura Branton and Kaitlin Kitchens set a new Tech record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.50. The relay unit placed eighth overall to score for the home-standing Yellow Jackets.

Tech went on to set another school record in the 800 free relay, as the squad of Iris Wang, Emily Ilgenfritz, Kitchens and Ruiu touched the wall in a new Tech-best time of 7:08.87. The relay scored for the team with a seventh-place finish and their NCAA ‘B’ cut time.

In the first leg of the 800 free relay, Wang broke her own school record in the 200 free with a split time of 1:45.71, which is also an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying mark. Her previous record in the 200 free was 1:45.92.

In the 3-meter dive prelims, the Yellow Jackets were led by Carly Doi’s 28th-place finish with a score of 234.60. Freshman Abbey Yates (209.25) and seniors Andrea Demick (202.85) and Madison Young (170.75) rounded out the Yellow Jacket divers.


Men’s Diving Highlights

In the 1-meter dive prelims, a trio of Yellow Jackets competed for Tech inMatt Casillas, Omar Eteiba and Nolan Mallet.

Casillas placed 14th with a score 282.10, while Eteiba placed 28th overall with a mark of 238.45. Mallet finished with a score of 205.00 to finish 34th.

The men’s diving championships will continue with the 3-meter springboard dive prelims and finals on Wednesday, Feb. 15, and the platform prelims and finals on Thursday, Feb. 16.

*The 200 medley relay team of Paschal, Ruiu, Branton and Kitchens set a new Tech record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.50.

*In the 800 free relay, the team of Wang, Ilgenfritz, Kitchens and Ruiu touched the wall in a new Tech-best time of 7:08.87, which was also an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time.

*Sophomore Iris Wang set a new school record in the 200 free with her time of 1:45.71 in the first leg of the 800 free relay, which was also an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time.
