CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Led by a pair of victories by junior Scott Schnugg, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team won its fifth-straight dual match with a 5-2 decision on the road over Miami on Thursday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
Schnugg teamed with Roger Anderson to get the Yellow Jackets (7-2) started against the Hurricanes (5-4) in doubles play. The duo defeated Miami’s team of Andrew Golub and Eric Hechtman by an 8-6 score at No. 1, while Tech’s team of Jason Pieters and Joao Menano were 8-3 winners at No. 2 doubles over Luis Manrique and Shauny Hoyes.
In singles action, Schnugg continued his strong play, as he was as straight-set winner over Golub at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. After winning the first set by 6-3 score, Schnugg cruised to a 6-2 victory in the second frame. Pieters followed Schnugg at No. 3 singles, defeating Manrique in a three-set affair. Pieters lost the first set by a 6-3 score, before rallying to win the next two by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
Junior Joao Menano was the Jackets’ third singles winner of the day, as he defeated Colin Purcell at No. 4 in three sets. Menano dropped the first set by a 6-2 score and then won the next two by matching 6-2, 6-2 scores. At No. 5 singles, Tech’s West Nott was a winner over Hechtman in three sets. Nott lost the first set in a tiebreaker (7-6) and then had little problems from then on, winning the next two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
Georgia Tech will return to action on Saturday, when it faces Big East foe Virginia Tech in Coral Gables, Fla., in a match that will get under way at 10 a.m.
