Career Notes
> Co-captain his last two seasons … Smooth mid-range jump shot and good defensive skills … More effective on the wing, but answered the call to play the point for Tech on occasion during each of his first two seasons.
> Missed the entire 2008-09 season after being diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a congenital condition discovered after he collided with a teammate in a preseason workout … Underwent successful surgery to correct the condition Dec. 18, 2008 in Los Angeles and returned to Atlanta Jan. 3 to begin the spring semester.
> Graduated in May, 2009 with his degree in Management, and was cleared in the spring to begin conditioning and individual instruction … Named in August to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Board … Already a member of the ACC’s SAAB.
> Recipient of the Bob Bradley Spirit and Courage Award from the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2010 … Finalist for the V Foundation Comeback Award.
> A left-handed shooter who follows a distinguished line of southpaw stars at Tech, including Kenny Anderson, Travis Best, Tony Akins, Jason Collier, Clarence Moore and Isma’il Muhammad.
> Progressed rapidly after December of his freshman year, both in basketball and in the classroom, and has made the Dean’s List … Named team’s top student-athlete at its year-end banquet in 2007 … Called the “hardest working kid I’ve been around” by his high school coach.
> Wore No. 13 his last three seasons after giving up his former No. 1 to Javaris Crittenton.
2009-10
> Team co-captain who returned to Tech’s starting lineup after sitting out the 2008-09 season due to injury, starting every game.
> Averaged less than two turnovers per game and continued to play excellent defense, guarding multiple positions.
> Averaged 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds in the ACC Tournament … Went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to help seal Tech’s semifinal victory over NC State.
> Led the Jackets with a career-best 16 points in their first meeting against Wake Forest, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the floor, his only three-point attempt, and 5-of-6 from the foul line … Followed that with 14 points in just 13 minutes against Kentucky State, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the floor and both of his three-point attempts.
> Did not shoot often (averaged 5.1 FG attempts a game), but averaged more than six points a game, shot 41.7 percent from three-point range and 75.8 percent from the line … Had six double-digit scoring games.
> Set career highs for three-point shooting (15-for-36, 41.7 pct.) and rebound average.
> Hit the go-ahead three-point field goal with 2:22 left and scored 11 points in Tech’s win at Charlotte.
> Shot 44.7 percent from the floor his last two seasons, compared to just 36.7 combined his first two years.
> Averaged 5.0 points and went 5-for-10 from the floor in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
2007-08
> Established statistical highs in all offensive categories while giving Tech excellent defense on the perimeter … Key player in Tech’s improvement on the defensive end since early January, helping limit many of the ACC’s top scorers well below their averages.
> Upon re-joining the starting lineup Jan. 12 at Miami, averaged around 29 minutes per game, including a personal-best 34 minutes at NC State and against Wake Forest, and six other games of 30 or more … Tech improved from last to fifth in the ACC in three-point percentage defense from Jan. 12 to the end of the season.
> Averaged 7.3 points with a team-high 28 steals while hitting 46.6 percent of his shots over that 18-game stretch.
> Averaged 29 minutes in ACC play, second on the team, after playing just 13.5 minutes a game over his first two years in conference games.
> Didn’t shoot a lot (5.2 FG attempts per game), but made more use of his excellent midrange shot and hit 47.6 percent from the floor … Made just 36.7 percent from the floor his first two years combined.
> Had four double-figure games in ACC play, including a career-high 15 points (5-9 FG, 4-7 FT) against Florida State … Averaged 7.6 points in ACC regular-season games.
> Scored 12 points (8-of-11 FT) with a career-high eight rebounds and made some key plays at both ends of the floor in Tech’s win over Charlotte in the Paradise Jam … Shot 7-of-9 from the floor with seven assists in three games in the Virgin Islands.
> Also served as a point guard for Tech, starting four straight games at that position in November … Season-high five assists vs. Presbyterian.
2006-07
> Worked as Tech’s backup point guard throughout preseason practice, but moved back to his more familiar spot on the wing … Made significant contributions off the bench defensively in the last nine games beginning Feb. 6 against NC State (13 min. on average), mostly bringing energy and defense, but also averaged 2.7 points per game (10-for-22 FG).
> Had 13 points combined against NC State and UConn after scoring a total of 13 in Tech’s first 22 games … Scored six of Tech’s first nine points to get Tech rolling against UConn … Hit a three in the first overtime of Tech’s double-OT loss to Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament.
> Saw his minutes increase after Dec. 18 (following fall exams) because of his defensive effort on the floor … Worked an average of 10 minutes over the next 10 games until his DNP against Virginia Tech … Came off the bench to work 11 minutes Feb. 6 against NC State, scoring seven points to match his season high and playing solid defense on Wolfpack point guard Engin Atsur.
> Previous scoring high occurred against Winston-Salem State (7 points, 3-5 FG), but cracked the scoring column in only 10 games all year.
2005-06
> Played double-digit minutes in all but two games, mostly providing solid defensive help, but was an offensive factor at times … Scored a career-best 13 points Jan. 31 at Virginia Tech (4-10 FG, 4-4 FT, 3 assists, 4 rebounds).
> Started 11 straight games (coinciding with an injury to Mario West) before FSU on Feb. 9, averaging 5.5 points while shooting 43.6 percent and taking 16 steals … Also had 23 assists over that stretch, including a career-high five against Maryland on Jan. 25.
> Averaged 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and shot 36.4 percent from the floor (4-for-13 from three) in ACC games.
> Scored 12 points (4-7 FG, 4-4 FT) against Jacksonville and 10 (4-6 FG, 4 assists, 0 turnovers) against Vanderbilt for his only other double-digit scoring games.
High School
> Overcame injury to average 21.4 points and 14.5 rebounds as a senior at Palisades Charter High School in Pacific Palisades, leading his team into the City Section playoffs … Earned first-team all-city honors despite being sidelined from September to December of his senior year with a stress fracture in his right foot … Averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks per game as a junior and was named all-city in Los Angeles by SoCal Hoops.
> Named a high honorable mention All-Americans by Street & Smith’s magazine … Ranked No. 110 in the nation by Athlon Sports … Lettered four years and served as team captain two years for coach James Paleno.
> Played for the Select Team at the Global Games.
Personal
> Full name is D’Andre DeVon Bell … Teammates call him “Dre” … Born June 17, 1987 in San Diego … Son of D’Andre and Onerra Bell … Enjoys music and poetry … Chose Tech as much for the Management curriculum as basketball (“He’s the kind of kid who ended up taking additional math classes he didn’t need to to get into any other schools, but he really wanted to go Tech,” said Paleno).
