Road to Charlotte: Football Faces FSU for ACC Title

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech vies for the program’s 17 conference championship when the Coastal Division champions face the defending national champion Florida State Seminoles in Saturday’s ACC Championship Game in Charlotte. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will be the 24th series meeting between the schools and the first since the 2012 ACC Championship Game (a 21-15 FSU win). Florida State leads the series, 13-9-1.

  • Georgia Tech opened the series with an 8-game unbeaten streak – wins in 1952, 1955, 1958, 1963, 1970, 1971, and 1975. Tech and FSU tied in 1962.
  • Florida State won the first 12 meetings as ACC rivals (1992-2003).
  • Georgia Tech has won two of the last three meetings – 2008 (31-28) and 2009 (49-44).

WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
Georgia Tech’s 123 points off turnovers are the fourth-most in FBS this season. Tech has seven red-zone takeaways – second-most in FBS. 41 of Tech’s 123 points off turnovers have come via a defensive touchdown.

TAKEAWAY NEALY
Quayshawn Nealy’s eight career interceptions are tied for the most among active non-defensive backs in the nation. The senior also has four career defensive touchdowns, including two this season.

10-WIN SEASONS
With its 30-24 OT road win at Georgia, Georgia Tech clinched just its ninth 10-win season in program history – and fourth of the ACC era. Paul Johnson became the second GT head coach to post multiple 10-win seasons on The Flats.

ON THE DEFENSIVE
Georgia Tech leads the FBS with 10 different players having recorded an interception this year.

RUNNING CLOCK
Georgia Tech leads the ACC and ranks third among all FBS teams in average time of possession (34:02). The Jackets have also had the ball for more than 10 minutes in 12 of 48 quarters this season. Tech has held the ball 10+ minutes in seven of the last 13 quarters.

3RD DOWN CONVERSIONS
Georgia Tech continues to lead FBS in 3rd down conversions with a clip of 57.4 percent (85 of 148). The Jackets also lead the ACC in 4th down conversion rate.

DEFENSIVE OPPORTUNITY
Georgia Tech is tied for second nationally with six defensive TDs this season – tops among ACC schools. Tech leads FBS with five interception returns for TD. Five different Yellow Jackets have scored a defensive TD – Quayshawn Nealy (2), P.J. Davis, D.J. White, Jamal Golden, and Chris Milton.

#GT300
Georgia Tech has rushed for 300 or more yards in 46 of 92 games and 400 or more yards 14 times in the Paul Johnson era. The Yellow Jackets are 37-9 when rushing for 300+ yards, including an 12-2 mark in the last 14 games. Johnson is 71-18 at the FBS level when his teams rush for 300+ yards. Georgia Tech has now rushed for 200 or more yards in 12 consecutive games – the longest active streak among FBS schools.

POCKET PROTECTION
Georgia Tech has allowed an ACC-low 10 sacks in 12 games, the fourth-fewest in FBS. Only Oklahoma (6), Wisconsin (9), and Northern Illinois (9) have allowed fewer sacks.
