Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Hewitt

Opening Statement

“Obviously, I’m very happy we won this game, but I’m even happier we won’t have to see Greivis Vasquez anymore in an ACC game at least. Well-deserved player of the year. I kept telling my kids, you know he’s going to come back and do something sparkling. Him making three’s, and their pressure got them back in the game.”

On Shumpert’s defensive play

“He’s one of the best defensive players in this league. We realize that sometimes he can be a little erratic offensively, but when he’s on his game, he’s getting a lot of deflections and he’s talking an awful lot on defense. The play he made at the end of the game — we actually wanted to foul there — but he just stepped up and made a big-time defensive play.”

On turnovers

“It’s not going to be pretty all the time, but after the first timeout we took, I felt like we matched their intensity, which is all we were looking to do.”

On what win does for NCAA hopes

“Right now we’re in this tournament. Right now we can answer all the questions ourselves so we’ll just see what happens tomorrow and take it from there.”

Sophomore Guard Iman Shumpert

On the steal from Vasquez in closing seconds

“I figured he was going to try and get a foul. I just kept replaying in my head the last time they made a big shot against us, and I figured if he showed the ball, I was going to deflect it, so I tried to deflect it up instead of smack it down.”

Junior Guard Maurice Miller

On the motivation behind his play tonight

“Just bring energy, just bring a spark. We started out pretty sluggish, so coach put me in and I just made a commitment to myself to come out and bring energy and just get us pumped out. Once we do that, we’re a pretty good team.”
