No. 7 Georgia Tech to Ace for the Cure vs. No. 4 Notre Dame Saturday

March 11, 2009

ATLANTA – The seventh-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team, who has partnered with the Atlanta Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in an effort to raise awareness and funds to help fight the cause of breast cancer, has scheduled its annual “Ace for the Cure” event on Saturday, March 14 against No. 4 Notre Dame.

The Yellow Jackets (7-4) and Fighting Irish will begin play at the Bill Moore Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Parents, fans, businesses and coworkers may pledge amounts for every ace the Yellow Jackets (as a team) record against Notre Dame, or they can make flat donations to the cause.

“We have had some great matches against Notre Dame over the past couple of years and I expect this one to be the same,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We ask that our fans come out on Saturday and show their support not only for our ladies but also help us with Ace for the Cure. Please help by making a pledge and join us in the battle against breast cancer.”

The Jackets, who are finishing up a four-match homestand, swept a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference matches last weekend. Junior Amanda McDowell and sophomore Noelle Hickey each picked up a two singles and doubles wins apiece.

Pledges and donations for “Ace for the Cure” can be made by contacting Georgia Tech Athletics’ assistant director of communications Dan Goldberger (404-894-5445, dgoldberger@athletics.gatech.edu). All money raised by the Yellow Jackets goes directly to the Komen Foundation’s local affiliate in their community.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, the Komen Foundation has raised more than $1 Billion for the fight against breast cancer.
