ATLANTA – Senior Christy Striplin, playing in her final regular-season home match, defeated Karin Lundmark in straight sets to earn the clinching victory as the sixth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team garnered a 7-0 win over Maryland (4-15, 1-8 ACC) Sunday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Due to rain in the forecast, Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton and the Terrapins head coach Martin Novak agreed to play the singles matches before the doubles matches. The plan worked, as the teams got all six singles matches in outdoors before the rain began to fall.

Striplin, who was honored prior to the match with a special presentation, scored a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lundmark on court three to help push the Yellow Jackets overall season record to 15-5 and 8-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“I am just happy for Christy, she has had an amazing career here at Georgia Tech,” Shelton said. “Being apart of three National Championships and a bunch of ACC Championships. She is just an amazing competitor. Match after match, she finds a way to get the job done.”

Freshman Lynn Blau opened the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jordan Hansbrough from the sixth position in the lineup. Junior Amanda McDowell and sophomore Noelle Hickey would then push the Tech lead to 3-0 behind straight-set wins on courts one and two, respectively. Striplin then sealed the win for the Jackets.

Tech also got singles wins from freshman Viet Ha Ngo and Sasha Krupina.

With the Jackets lead at 6-0, the two teams had to move doubles indoors due to rain. It did not effect Tech, who swept all three doubles matches, including an 8-1 win by the tandem of Irina Falconi and Krupina in the second position to clinch the final point of the day.

“We have put ourselves in a great position to winning again this weekend,” Shelton added. “We are looking forward to going after a regular-season title next weekend.”

The Yellow Jackets will close out the regular season on the road at North Carolina next Friday and against Duke Saturday. The match at UNC is scheduled for 1 p.m., while the Duke match will be played at noon.
