No. 46 Tech Men's Tennis Fall 4-1 to Florida in NCAA Opening Round

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Scott Blackmon picked up a 6-1, 6-1 singles win over the Gators Billy Mulligan for the No. 46 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (7-16) but it was not enough as the Jackets fell 4-1 to 19th-ranked Florida in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday.

The Gators (14-7) took an early 1-0 lead over the Jackets after winning the doubles point with victories from first and third positions. Third-ranked Jesse Levine and Greg Ouellette outlasted the tandem of David North and Jose Muguruza for an 8-5 victory at the top spot. Shortly after, the team of Jordan Dolberg and Dan Cash defeated Jordan DeLass and George Gvelesiani 8-3 to seal the point.

Zach Rath and Blackmon held a 6-3 lead in the No. 2 doubles position before their match was called due to the Gators two victories.

In singles play, Florida grabbed a 2-0 advantage when Nestor Briceno defeated DeLass 6-0, 6-2 from the No. 3 position. The Jackets quickly cut the deficit to one as Blackmon garnered his win over Mulligan at the fourth spot in the lineup.

The Gators regained a two point lead on Tech after No. 21 Ouellette took care of Muguruza 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Third-ranked Levine sealed the victory for Florida when he defeated No. 42 North 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot.

Florida will move on to face to Florida State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
