ATLANTA – Noelle Hickey earned wins in singles and doubles but the fourth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 7 Baylor (5-3) Sunday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

“Overall, we are a little disappointed with the loss today,” head coach Bryan Shelton. “As a team and a program, we need to step up and do a better job. Everyone needs to take responsibility.”

Baylor opened the day by taking two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead on the Yellow Jackets. Tech’s 17th-ranked duo of Hickey and Christy Striplin upended the seventh-ranked Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi 8-6 in the second flight for the Jackets lone doubles win.

No. 13 Irina Falconi pushed the score even with a 6-1, 6-0 win over No. 26 Taylor Ormond in the top singles position. The Bears took the lead once again behind a 6-4, 6-4 victory by No. 75 Broosova over No. 10 Amanda McDowell at No. 2 singles.

Hickey, the 77th-ranked player, needed three sets but finished off No. 54 Borsanyi, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, to pull the team’s even for a second time.

Baylor proved to be too much for the Jackets, picking up a win at No. 5 singles followed by No. 40 Jelena Stanivuk’s 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 victory of Striplin to clinch the win.

In the most exciting match of the day, Yellow Jacket freshman Viet Ha Ngo and Baylor’s Kasia Siwosz needed a super-tiebreaker to decide their match in the sixth singles flight. Siwosz outlasted Ngo, 13-11, in the final set for a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11) win.

The Yellow Jackets will continue their homestand next Saturday, March 7 against No. 10 Miami. The match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center will get underway at noon.
