ATLANTA – Jonas Hayes had four of his career-high 25 points in the second overtime and added 10 rebounds, helping Georgia upset No. 3 Georgia Tech 83-80 Saturday.

Hayes missed two free throws that would have given the Bulldogs (8-3) a four-point lead with 20.7 seconds left in the second OT, but Jarrett Jack missed a layup on the other end.

The rebound fell into the lap of Georgia’s Chris Daniels, who was sitting on the floor, and he passed to Levi Stukes. He was fouled and made one free throw, and B.J. Elder missed a long, desperation 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

After it was over, fans mobbed the Georgia players at halfcourt in celebration.

Georgia Tech’s Will Bynum forced the second extra period with a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left in the first one.

The Yellow Jackets (12-1) lost for the first time, snapping a school-record streak to start the season. They haven’t won in Athens since 1976.

B.J. Elder had 25 for Georgia Tech and Will Bynum added a season-high 15 off the bench.

Perhaps motivated by an appearance by his twin brother, Jarvis, a guard for the Washington Wizards, Jonas Hayes made 9 of 17 shots to better his career best by five points. He had 20 twice earlier this season.

Georgia, coming off a 21-point loss to No. 16 Pittsburgh earlier this week, led almost throughout. Damien Wilkins had 18 points and Rashad Wright scored 16 for the Bulldogs.

The last lead for Georgia Tech came with 2:06 left in regulation on a 3-pointer by Elder, and Daniels tied it at 68 with a putback.

Clarence Moore missed a wide-open 3 at the end of regulation that would have won it for Georgia Tech.

Jarvis Hayes was honored before the game, part of Georgia’s tradition of bringing back former basketball lettermen. He sat courtside in a Herschel Walker throwback jersey.
