ATHENS, GA. – Freshman Kendal Woodard earned a three-set win over Georgia’s 15th-ranked Maho Kowase but the 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets dropped a 4-3 contest to No. 5 Georgia Saturday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
It was the first win over a ranked opponent for Woodard, who now owns a team-best 12 singles wins this year. Woodard dropped a tough first set, 6-4, to Kowase. Woodard responded with a 6-4 second set win and finished off the comeback win with a 6-2 third-set victory.
Georgia grabbed an early lead by taking the doubles point. Woodard and fellow freshman Megan Kurey improved to 10-4 in doubles play and 6-1 in dual matches with an 8-3 win over Lauren Herring and Kowase at No.2 doubles but wins by UGA at No. 1 and 3 gave the Bulldogs the first point of the day.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-6 win by No. 96 Kate Fuller over Kurey at No. 4 singles and a 6-3, 6-2 win by eighth-ranked Lauren Herring over No. 62 Elizabeth Kilborn at No. 1 singles. Woodard’s win at No. 2 singles gave Georgia Tech its first point of the day.
Georgia’s Silvia Garcia, ranked No. 100, defeated Tech’s Natasha Prokhnevska 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 on court three to clinch the Bulldog win.
Muriel Wacker and Jasmine Minor earned singles wins for Georgia Tech on courts five and six, respectively. Wacker downed Mia King, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 and Minor topped Lilly Kimbell, 7-5, 6-0.
