No. 23 Tech Women's Tennis Falls to No. 12 North Carolina, 5-2

April 12, 2003

ATLANTA — Junior Sekita Grant and senior Mysti Morris were the only singles winners on the day as the 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team was unable to rally after dropping the doubles point and fell to 12th-ranked North Carolina by a 5-2 score on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets (13-4, 5-2 ACC) fell behind early against the Tar Heels (15-6, 6-1 ACC), as they were unable to hang on and dropped the doubles point to open the day. Tech got the early lead, as its team of Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto were 8-5 winners at No. 3 doubles over UNC’s Kate Pinchbeck and Tanja Markovic. The Jackets team of Mysti Morris and Lydsay Shosho led at No. 2 doubles by a 7-5 score, but the Tar Heel tandem of Marlene Mejia and Lee Bairos rallied for a 9-7 win to clinch the point.

In singles play, North Carolina took control of the match, winning at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 to put the match out of reach. Kendall Cline’s straight-set, 6-2, 6-2, win over Tech’s Lyndsay Shosho gave the Tar Heels a decisive 4-0 lead in the match.

Morris was the Jackets’ first singles winner of the day, as she needed three sets to defeat UNC’s Bairos. Morris won the first set by a 6-2 score, before dropping the second by a 6-4 count. She then won the third set in tiebreaker by a 10-6 score. Grant was Tech’s final singles winner of the day, as she needed just two sets to dispose of the Tar Heels’ Tanja Markovic, winning by scores of 6-4 and 7-6 (3).

The Yellow Jackets will close out their regular-season schedule tomorrow when they host fifth-ranked Duke at 1 p.m. A full recap of that match will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
