No. 22 Georgia Tech Men's Tennis Falls to No. 17 Miami

The No. 22 Georgia Tech men’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2006 season to the No. 17 Miami Hurricanes by a 7-0 score. With the defeat, the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference while Miami improves to 7-2, 2-1 ACC.

The Hurricanes opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Miami’s pair of Vivek Subramanian and P.J. Passalacqua started things off with a win over Jordan Delass and George Gvelesiani at No. 3, 8-5. Quickly after, the Hurricanes team of Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman defeated Scott Blackmon and Zachary Rath, 8-6, to win the point. Georgia Tech’s lone victory in doubles came at No. 1 as the 42nd ranked team of Marko Rajevac and David North defeated Luigi D’Agord and Daniel Vallverdu, 9-7.

Miami increased its lead to 2-0 as No. 8 D’Agord easily defeated Rajevac at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. The Hurricanes then extended their lead to 3-0 as after dropping the first set, No. 18 Cohen beat Rath at No. 2, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-2. Miami then won the deciding point at No. 5 singles as Gvelesiani dropped his first dual match of the season, 6-4, 6-4 to John Hoyes.

In other singles matches on the day, North pushed his match against Vallverdu at No. 3 singles to a third set, before falling in the third by the scores of 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 while Delass dropped a tough three-set match in a tiebreaker to Hechtman at No. 4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9). In the last match on the afternoon, Blackmon fell in a close three set match at No. 6 singles to Submaranian, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10).

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Wednesday when they take on No. 15 Clemson at 2:30 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
