Fresh of the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, the 17th-ranked Georgia Tech volleyball team will look to win its tenth straight match when it hosts Florida A&M Friday at 7 p.m. in O’Keefe Gymnasium in a match which will be broadcast by WREK radio (91.1 FM) and over the internet at www.wrek.org.
The Yellow Jackets (31-5) are coming off of a win over Florida State for the ACC title, the second conference championship in school history, and need only one win to tie the school record for wins in a season set in 1996. Florida A&M (23-5) recently won the Mideastern Athletic Conference for the second consecutive year. The meeting marks the third time the two teams have met this season, with the Yellow Jackets winning each of those previous contests.
“We are still very excited about the ACC title, but it is important for our team to turn its focus now to Florida A&M and the upcoming NCAA Tournament,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “We’ve seen Florida A&M this season a few times and they are a very good team. They’ve also earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament so I expect they will be a good opponent for us Friday.”
The Yellow Jackets are led by all-American candidate, and ACC Tournament MVP, Lynnette Moster who with 576 kills has broken the record for kills in a season. ACC all-tournament selection Alexandra Preiss leads the team in hitting percentage (.348) while Kele Eveland, another ACC all-tournament selection, runs an offense which leads the conference in kills per game (16.69) and assists per game (15.35).
Tickets may be purchased at the gate beginning at 6 p.m. Fans who hold a ticket stub from Wednesday’s Georgia-Georgia Tech men’s basketball game may present their ticket and receive free admission.
