ATLANTA – Despite a pair of wins from senior Roger Anderson, the 14th-ranked Georgia Tech men’s tennis team was unable to rally after dropping the doubles point for the first time in nine matches, dropping a 5-2 decision to 11th-ranked Duke on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.
The Yellow Jackets (11-4, 3-2 ACC) picked up just one doubles match, claiming a victory at the No. 1 position against the Blue Devils (11-5, 3-0 ACC). Tech’s 19th-ranked tandem of Roger Anderson and Scott Schnugg were 8-5 winners over Duke’s eighth-ranked team of Michael Yani and Phillip King.
In singles play, the Jackets got wins from both Roger Anderson and junior West Nott at Nos. 1 and 4 respectively. Anderson was dominant in his straight-set win over 24th-ranked Phillip King, dropping just five games in the victory. He won the first set with ease by a 6-1 score and then held off King for a 6-4 win in the second frame.
Nott needed three sets to claim his match with Jason Zimmermann, sweeping the first set by a 6-0 score before dropping the second set by a 6-4 count. In the third frame, Nott picked up his fifth-straight victory on the year with a 6-2 decision in the deciding set.
The Blue Devils clinched the match when Michael Yani won a tiebreaker in the second set to defeat Tech’s Scott Schnugg at No. 2 singles, winning the match by scores of 6-4 and 7-6 (6).
The Yellow Jackets will have little time to get ready for their next match, as they will host 32nd-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday at noon in a key ACC match for both teams.
