ATLANTA – Kelly Anderson and Alison Silverio recorded the only singles victories for the Jackets as No. 12 North Carolina (18-6, 4-3 ACC) defeated Georgia Tech (11-8, 4-3), 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels won all three doubles matches to begin the afternoon 1-0 heading into singles’ play.
North Carolina took a 2-0 lead when 28th-ranked Aniela Mojzis earned an easy 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 57 Lyndsay Shosho in the No. 1 singles slot. Tar Heel freshman Caitlin Collins then made the score 3-0 by defeating Tech’s Lindsey Stauss, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 position.
Anderson and Silverio both battled to earn points for the Jackets, as each won in three sets. Anderson came back after dropping the first set 2-6 to UNC’s Lee Bairos to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. Silverio won her first set 6-2 before dropping the second set, 4-6, to Kendall Cline. She then came back with a 6-3 win in the third set to make the final margin 5-2 in favor of the Tar Heels.
The Jackets will conclude regular-season play with a match against Duke in Durham tomorrow at 1 p.m.
