April 8, 2006

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Top-Ranked Kristi Miller dropped just two games in singles and three in doubles, but it wasn’t enough as the 12th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (16-4, 7-1 ACC) dropped their first conference match of the season, 4-3, at No. 5 North Carolina (20-3, 5-1 ACC) Saturday afternoon.

The UNC duo of Tanja Markovic and Caitlin Collins rallied from a 6-4 deficit at No. 2 doubles after the match was moved indoors to capture an 8-6 victory over Tech’s Kelly Anderson and Whitney McCray to capture the doubles point for the Tar Heels after Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith earned an 8-2 win over Kacie Anson and Alison Silverio at the No. 3 slot.

Tech’s 16th-ranked duo of Miller and Lyndsay Shosho stopped Carolina’s seventh-ranked Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long at the top doubles slot to round out the doubles play.

Miller then tied the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over UNC’s 32nd-ranked Collins at the top singles slot before the Tar Heels earned three-straight victories at the Nos. 4, 2 and 3 singles slots to hand Tech its first ACC loss of the season.

McCray earned the Jackets’ second point of the day with a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2 victory over Markovic at the No. 6 singles slot, which made the score 4-2 in favor of the Tar Heels, and 94th-ranked Anderson finished off the Tech scoring with a win in a third-set tiebreaker against Laura Reichert.
