Lauren Sauer registered 17 kills and hit .667 as the 12th-ranked volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (30-15, 30-20, 30-9) victory over Temple in the first match of the Buckeye Classic Friday night. The Yellow Jackets now stand at 4-0 on the season while the Owls fall to 0-4.
Offensively, the Jackets posted a season-high . 507 team hitting percentage and only five errors in the entire match. Lynnette Moster had 14 kills and hit .571, Jayme Gergen had four kills on six attempts, Alexandra Preiss notched 5 kills and hit. 364 while Laura Kuhn had a perfect night, recording kills on all four of her attempts. Kele Eveland notched 30 assists in the two games she played while Lindsey Laband added nine.
Defensively, Tech posted 41 digs and 22 block assists as a team. Jennifer Randall had a team-high 10 digs, while Marisa Aston and Keight Vincent each added six. In the blocking category, Preiss had six block assists while Gergen added five and Kuhn had four.
Temple was held to a .029 hitting percentage in the match as Stephanie Buynovsky led the team with nine kills.
In game one, the Jackets built a 14-6 lead on two service aces and two kills from Moster and several Temple errors. After a Temple timeout, Tech continued to roll on three kills from Preiss and two more from Moster as the Jackets mounted a 23-11 lead. The final point of the game came on a kill from Sauer as the Jackets won the game, 30-15. In the game, Tech hit an astounding .708 as a team with five kills from Moster and four from Preiss. Keight Vincent had five digs in the game.
With the score at 7-5 in the second game, the Jackets scored four straight points on a kill from Moster, two straight blocks from Kuhn and Preiss and another block from Preiss and Moster to make the score 11-5. Tech then took control of the game as Gergen posted a kill and then served four points while Sauer recorded three kills. The Jackets won the game, 30-20 on a kill behind the setter from Preiss. In the game, Sauer led the team with eight kills while Moster had five.
Tech opened game three with six straight points behind the serve of Jennifer Randall and blocks from Sauer, Gergen and Lindsey Laband, forcing the Owls to call a timeout at 6-0. Temple had to call their last timeout at 13-1 as Tech continued to play solid defense and serve strong, forcing the Owls into several hitting errors. The Jackets cruised for the rest of the match with strong offense and won the game 30-9.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Sunday, Sept. 7 at 12 p.m. when they take on Western Michigan (3-1) in the finals of the Ohio State Buckeye Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
