ATLANTA – The 10th-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team (2-0) will face No. 29 Arizona State (2-0) when it hosts the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday and Sunday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The first round match between the Yellow Jackets and Sun Devils will begin Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Jackets will face either No. 24 Alabama or 34th-ranked Kentucky, who will meet in the other first round match Saturday at 9 a.m.
“We have put ourselves in a good position by being one of 15 teams around the country hosting this weekend’s event,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We have three great schools coming in to compete against us. We are just ready to go and excited for the weekend. We want to show our fans some high quality tennis.”
The winners of Saturday’s matches will play at 2:30 p.m., Sunday with the consolation match scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Admission is free to the general public. Live stats for both Georgia Tech matches will be available on ramblinwreck.com.
Tech will meet Arizona State for the second time, having defeated the Sun Devils last season in the second round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, 4-2. The Jackets are more familiar with their possible second-round opponents. Tech is 6-8 all-time against Alabama but is 3-1 against Kentucky.
This is the second year of the “regional” format for the ITA Indoor Championships with 15 school sites playing host to first and second rounds with the winners, plus Wisconsin, advancing to the round of 16 in Madison, Wis., from Feb. 13-16. In the past, 16 teams were invited to Wisconsin, where they played a minimum of three matches.
Parking for Saturday’s tennis matches will be free of charge in Peter’s Parking Deck at the corner of Fowler and 4th Streets before 10:30 a.m. and after 2:30 p.m. This lot is also utilized for basketball parking and will be a pay lot from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. If Peter’s Deck is full, additional parking is available in the W-21 lot at the corner of Ferst Drive and State Street.
Parking areas in the vicinity of the basketball arena and the tennis center, including Fowler Street, 8th Street, the AMC lots, and the O’Keefe lot will be available for basketball permit holders only until approximately 2:30 p.m. Cars left in these areas will be subject to ticketing and/or towing.
