Feb. 4, 2008
ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s top-ranked women’s tennis team, the reigning ITA National Indoor Champion, will open the 2008 ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships as the No. 4 seed and will face the University of Wisconsin in the first round at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
The 21st-annual event, which is hosted annually by Wisconsin, is played at Nielsen Stadium in Madison. The premier indoor event of the collegiate tennis season has typically been an early indicator as to the national champion, as 10 of the previous 20 National Indoor winners have gone on to capture the NCAA Title, including each of the last four (Stanford – 2004, 2005, 2006; Georgia Tech – 2007).
The Yellow Jackets are one of just five different schools to have captured the ITA National Team Indoor title over the last 20 years, as Stanford has won nine championships, Florida has taken six titles, Georgia has been the victor in three final matches, and Duke and Tech have each won one title apiece.
Tech will look to rebound after its 6-1 loss to seventh-ranked Northwestern over the weekend. The loss ended Tech’s 23-match winning streak and 18-match home winning streak. Northwestern is the tournament’s No. 3 seed, while Stanford and UCLA are Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
Should the Yellow Jackets advance through the first round, they will face either Notre Dame, the team in which Tech defeated for the National Indoor title a year ago, or arch-rival Georgia in the quarterfinals.
