No. 1 Georgia Tech Women's Tennis Downs No. 6 Northwestern, 4-3

Feb. 12, 2007

EVANSTON, Ill. – After the Yellow Jackets dropped the doubles point, Amanda Craddock, Christy Striplin, Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio each won singles matches to lead No. 1 Georgia Tech (6-1) to a 4-3 victory over No. 6 Northwestern (5-2) Monday night at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Northwestern University.

The win over Northwestern was the Yellow Jackets’ first after entering the match with an 0-3 mark against the team that ended their run in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.

No. 82 Silverio fought off a pesky 66th-ranked Lauren Lui in the second set to clinch the match for the Yellow Jackets with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

After falling behind 1-0 in the match, Tech’s 64th-ranked Craddock made quick work of the Wildcats’ Nazlie Ghazal at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the match at 1-1 before 95th-ranked Striplin put the Yellow Jackets up by a point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Alexis Prousis at the No. 3 singles position.

Tech’s Miller then extended the Jackets’ lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Samantha Murray at the No. 2 singles slot before Northwestern’s Georgia Rose pulled the home team to within one point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the top singles position.

The Yellow Jackets fell behind early when the Wildcats’ second doubles duo of Lui and Murray clinched the first point of the match with a tiebreaker win over Tarryn Rudman and Silverio. Northwestern’s tandem of Keri Robison and Ghazal won the first match of the day with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 doubles position, but the Jackets’ top doubles team of Miller and Whitney McCray responded with an 8-6 win of their own over the Wildcats’ 30th-ranked duo of Rose and Prousis to set up the second doubles team for the deciding point.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action this weekend when they host the Auburn Tigers in the first home match of 2007 at the Bill Moore Tennis Center Saturday at 12 noon. Livestats for the match will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
