THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior Eric Chiu, along with four Tech relay teams, have earned berths in the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship, which begins Thursday in Indianapolis, Ind.
Chiu becomes the first Tech men’s swimmer to compete in the NCAA Championship since Gal Nevo in 2010, and is only the second Yellow Jacket in history to do so in the 100 fly (David Laitala in 2002).
The 2013 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship will be contested March 28-30 at the IU Natatorium and the IUPUI Sports Complex in Indianapolis, Ind.
“I’m thrilled for Eric and our four relay teams,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “This obviously is a great day for our program and indication of how we have progressed as a team this season. Eric’s 100 fly time puts him in scoring position in Indianapolis, and relays always give you a chance to score points.”
Chiu, a senior from Martinez, Ga., was clocked in a school-record time of 46.45 at the Yellow Jacket Championship Qualifier this past weekend in Atlanta, and the time is the 16th-fastest in the NCAA this season. He was the bronze-medalist in the 100 fly at the ACC Championship in a then-school record time of 47.03.
Thanks to Chiu’s qualification, four Yellow Jacket relays also clinched spots in the 2013 Championship – the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. Tech’s 200 free relay achieved an NCAA `A’ cut during the ACC Championship and owns the 17th-fastest time (1:18.26) in the field.
Chiu is one of 30 ACC swimmers competing in 42 individual events, while the ACC is sending 28 relays to Indianapolis.
