National Champions Host Georgia Tech Fall Invitational This Weekend

Sept. 20, 2007

ATLANTA – The reigning national champion Georgia Tech women’s tennis team lifts the lid on the 2007-08 season this weekend when they host the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked No. 1 at the end of the 2007 season, will face opponents from Georgia, Florida State and Harvard in the three-day tournament which begins Friday morning.

Doubles matches will be played each day at 10 a.m., with singles to follow. The Yellow Jackets are not scheduled to begin singles matches before 2 p.m. each afternoon.

“We are excited about a new year, a new season, and this new team,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We’re bringing in three very good freshmen that I think will make a big impact on this program. It’s great to enter this season with the momentum that we had at the end of 2007, and we’re excited about beginning our new year in defense of the national championship.”

Georgia Tech finished the 2007 season riding a 21-match winning streak, which included capturing the first NCAA Team Title, of any sport, in Georgia Tech history as well as earning the Yellow Jackets’ third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.

Georgia advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Championships, which were played on the Bulldogs’ home courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs fell to semifinalist California, 4-1, and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation.

Florida State, which finished the season ranked 19th in the ITA polls, also played in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, but fell to eventual national runner-up UCLA in the first round, 4-1.

Harvard has seven upperclassmen returning for the 2008 season, led by seniors Vilsa Curto and Stephanie Schnitter, while first-year head coach Traci Green looks to use her own playing experience to turn around the Crimson program after guiding Florida to a national title in 1998.

Results for all matches will be posted on RamblinWreck.com following the conclusion of doubles and singles each day.
