Muhammad & Stewart Named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

Dec. 1, 2003

Men’s Basketball player Isma’il Muhammad and women’s basketball stand out Alex Stewart were named the Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, December 1, 2003.

Muhammad, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., was named the Most Valuable Player of the Preseason NIT after leading Georgia Tech to the tournament championship. The Yellow Jackets knocked off No. 1 Connecticut, 77-61, in the semi-finals, and No. 25 Texas Tech, 85-65, in the championship game. Muhammad scored 38 points in 38 minutes of playing time off the bench, grabbed eight rebounds, and made 16 of 20 field goal attempts and 6 of 11 free throws in two games. He sparked the Jackets almost immediately upon entering the game in each case and electrified the Madison Square Garden crowd with his acrobatic dunks.

Stewart, a senior from Norcross, Ga., helped Tech to a 2-1 record in the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, with wins over James Madison and Southwest Missouri State. She shot 50 percent (12-24) from the field on the week, including 50 percent (6-12) from beyond the three-point arc. Stewart was 9-for-9 from the free throw line this week and is now 14-for-15 (.933) from the charity stripe for the season. She averaged 13 points, 5.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and two steals per game in the tournament. Stewart led the team with 18 points against JMU, had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists against West Virginia, and had 12 points and 9 assists against SW Missouri State.
