Morgan, Thomas Named Associated Press All-Americans

Dec. 15, 2009

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech junior defensive end Derrick Morgan was named first team All-American and Yellow Jacket junior wide receiver Demaryius Thomas was named third team All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

The honors continue to roll in for Morgan, who earlier this month earned first team All-American honors (AFCA), second team All-American (Camp), first team All-ACC, and he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Morgan was also named second team All-American by Sporting News on Tuesday.

Thomas is the first Georgia Tech offensive player named Associated Press All-American since Calvin Johnson in 2006.

Morgan and Clemson’s C.J. Spiller (all-purpose player) were the only two ACC players named to the AP first team.

Morgan has 12.5 sacks on the season, which ranks first in the ACC and sixth nationally. He is just the seventh player in Tech history to record 10 or more sacks in one season. He has 18.0 tackles for loss, which ranks second in the ACC and tied for 18th nationally.

Thomas, a first team All-ACC selection and a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, leads the ACC and ranks 16th nationally in receiving yards per game (88.8). He averages 25.1 yards per reception, the second-highest average nationally and the highest average in Georgia Tech and ACC history. Thomas has 18 receptions of 20 yards or longer this season, nine receptions of 50 yards or longer, and is tied for the most in the nation with four receptions of 70 yards or longer.
