Dec. 12, 2012

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior rightside hitter Monique Mead has been named an American Volleyball Coaches Association third team All-American the AVCA announced Wednesday. This is her first AVCA All-American appearance after three consecutive honorable mention accolades.

“What an incredible honor it is to be named an AVCA third team All-American,” head coach Tonya Johnson said. “Monique is certainly deserving of this special award.  I couldn’t be more proud of her and all she has done for our program.”

Mead earned the accolade after being named to the AVCA All-East Region team earlier this season and for the third straight year, as she earned honorable mention recognition her freshman year.

In addition, the Newnan, Ga., native, recently earned All-ACC recognition for the fourth year of her career, making her just the 13th player in ACC history and fourth player at Tech to accomplish the feat.

She led the Jackets this season with 459 kills, 56 serving aces and 562 points. Her 3.96 kills per set average was second in the ACC, and she led the league and ranked No. 7 in the NCAA with .48 serving aces per game.

In her senior season on the Flats, she became the all-time leader in career kills at Georgia Tech with 1,918, topping Lynnette Moster’s 1,859 set in 2001-04. She eclipsed 1,000 career digs and reached the 2,000-point mark.

Mead made a huge impact on the Georgia Tech program and is in the top 10 in six Georgia Tech career categories, two single-match and three season record lists.

She will wrap up her stellar career at Georgia Tech this Saturday when she graduates with a degree in business administration.
