THE FLATS – After recording a team-high nine tackles in his first extensive action in more than a month, Georgia Tech junior linebacker Brant Mitchell was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Linebacker of the Week, the ACC announced on Monday.
In addition to the nine stops, Mitchell added a sack, one-and-a-half tackles for loss and a pass breakup in Georgia Tech’s 28-22 win over No. 17 Virginia Tech on Saturday. Led by Mitchell, the Yellow Jackets limited the Hokies to 16 offensive points and 258 total yards, well below their season averages of 32.6 points per game and 430.1 yards per contest.
The impressive effort came in Mitchell’s first full game since Sept. 30. He sustained a lower-body injury in the first half at Miami (Fla.) on Oct. 14, missed the next week’s game versus Wake Forest, started but played in just one series at Clemson on Oct. 28 and was unable to play at Virginia on Nov. 4. Georgia Tech went 1-3 in those four games but is 4-1 this season with a healthy Mitchell in the lineup.
Mitchell and the Yellow Jackets (5-4, 4-3 ACC) wrap up ACC play on Saturday at Duke. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network (RSN – Fox Sports South in Atlanta).
