Pacific Palisades, Calif.-Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio swept their doubles matches Monday afternoon after Miller recorded her fourth singles victory of the tournament to advance to the Qualifier of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The duo remains a perfect 8-0 on the season after earning the Baylor Invitational doubles title two weeks ago, while Miller stands at 10-0 in singles play this fall and advances to a first-round Qualifier match against Nebraska’s Gitte Ostermann, the nation’s 44th-ranked singles player, Tuesday morning.
“We have won 14 matches thus far in the tournament, and I think that again, our team is gaining some confidence for the season,” said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “We have won some matches against some great teams like Florida and Duke, and played great matches against other top schools where we were competitive even in the losses, and I’m just really proud of the way our team has battled out here.”
Miller and Silverio came back in their third-round match early Monday afternoon to defeat Duke’s Kristin Cargill and Tory Zawacki, 8-6, before advancing to the Qualifier with an 8-5 victory over Florida’s Lolita Frangulyan and Whitney Benik in the evening session. Miller advanced in the singles bracket by defeating Cargill in the morning, winning the first set 6-4, before falling 2-6 in the second frame and fighting out a 7-6 (3) victory in the third-set tiebreaker.
Georgia Tech’s Kacie Anson and Dasha Potapova advanced to the fourth round of doubles play with an 8-3 victory over Harvard’s Elsa O’Riain and Eva Wang, but were unable to move on after falling to UCLA’s Laura Gordon and Elizabeth Lumpkin, 8-4, Monday evening.
“I think that with some hard work in the rest of the fall, we will be able to reverse some of those losses that we’ve had, but overall, I’m very pleased with the way this team has played,” Shelton said. “We have played hard, competed hard, and are really just having a lot of fun right now.”
Kelly Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho will begin their first matches of the tournament Tuesday morning after earning byes in both singles and doubles play in the pre-qualifier. Anderson will match up with No. 65 Nicole Bouffler of Long Beach State while Shosho meets No. 42 Katie McGaffigan of Wisconsin. The two juniors will then pair together to play Illinois’ Cynthya Goulet and Emily Wang, the nation’s 44th-ranked doubles team, Tuesday afternoon.
Results from all singles and doubles matches in the first round of the Qualifier will be posted on www.ramblinwreck.com at the conclusion of Georgia Tech’s play Tuesday evening.
