Atlanta – Fresh off back-to-back conference victories over two top 20 teams, the Yellow Jackets fell to Furman, 4-3, Friday for their sixth loss of the season.
The Paladins jumped on the board first, earning the doubles point by taking two of three. Georgia Tech’s Scott Blackmon and Jose Muguruza earned Tech’s only doubles victory with their 8-3 defeat of Ryan Friend and Andy Sobczyk.
Scott Blackmon tied it at one with his straight set win over Jordan Walters in the sixth singles spot but, Furman retook the lead when Bo Ladyman downed Jordan DeLass, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2, in the second singles spot.
Tech found themselves down 3-1 after Luke Rassow-Kantor fell to Chris Gilli in straight sets in the fifth singles spot. Zach Rath, in the in the four spot, and Eric Molnar, in the third singles spot, both won to tie the score at three.
Tech’s hopes rested with Jose Muguruza, in the No. 1 singles spot. Muguruza split the first two sets with Andy Juc but, found himself in a three-game hole in the third set. Juc held his lead and defeated Muguruza for the fourth Furman point and the win.
With the loss, the Jackets fall to 5-6 for the season.
The Jackets return to action Sunday, March 18 in Waco, Texas where they will face No. 4 Baylor. Tech’s next home match is on Friday, March 23 at 2:30 p.m. when they take on Atlantic Coast Conference foe, North Carolina. Admission to all Georgia Tech home tennis matches is free.
