SAN DIEGO – Marcus McDaniel and Andres Martin won their quarterfinal match against Simon/Savva of Charlotte 6-2, 6-3, before dropping their semifinal match to Vocel/Cash of Ohio State, 5-7, 6-1, 10-6.
The No. 8 doubles pairing in the nation McDaniel/Martin dominated proceeding against Simon/Savva. McDaniel/Martin won nine points by way of serves. McDaniel/Martin had six aces for the match while Simon/Savva had three double faults.
McDaniel/Martin never had their serve broken during the match and broke Simon/Savva’s serve three times.
The doubles pair took that momentum into the early part of their semifinal match jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Vocel/Cash brought the set level at 5-5 before McDaniel/Martin took the final two games to win the set 7-5.
Set two started slow for the Georgia Tech duo, dropping the first three games. McDaniel/Martin showed fight in game four after losing the first three points. They won the proceeding four points to take the game. That would be the only game the pair would win in the set as they dropped the set 6-1.
The decisive tiebreaker saw Vocel/Cash jump out to a 5-1 lead. Martin/McDaniel fought back to a 5-5 tie before dropping five of the next six points to lose the tiebreaker 10-6.
While the fall season may have ended for McDaniel and Martin, there is still one more day on the fall schedule for the Yellow Jackets. The final day of the GT Invite is Sunday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex with action starting at 11 a.m.
