Jones Secures Spot in Main Draw

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Georgia Tech women’s tennis junior Kenya Jones fought off match point on Wednesday afternoon to win a three-set battle and secure a spot in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

Facing a familiar foe in Ida Jarlskog of Florida in the final round of qualifying play, Jones fell behind early, dropping the first set, 6-3, and trailed in the second set, 5-4. The junior fought off a match point at 5-4 and came back to take the second set, 7-5, to force a deciding third set. Jones held strong in the final set and closed out the win, 6-3, to advance to the main draw.

“Kenya did a great job today against a tough opponent,” commented associate head coach Christy Lynch. “She started out making a few too many errors from the baseline, but was able to fight her way back into the match. She played a smart third set and was able to come forward and take swing volleys and executed very well. I am very proud of Kenya for advancing to the main draw.”

Main draw action gets underway on Thursday, Oct. 4. Jones will play at 2:45 p.m. EST. Out of a field of 64 qualifiers, Jones was one of eight qualifiers to secure spots in the main draw.
