ATLANTA – Georgia Tech center Alvin Jones shared Atlantic Coast Conference Player of theWeek honors and freshman Marvin Lewis was named the league’s Rookie of the Week for the fourth time after leading the Yellow Jackets (12-7, 4-4 ACC) to a pair of victories last week over Clemson and Florida State.
Jones was named co-Player of the Week, along with North Carolina’s Joseph Forte, after averaging 26 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in Tech’s two wins. The 6-11 senior from Lakeland, Fla., shot 74 percent (14-19) from the field and 71 percent (24-34) from the free throw line in the two contests.
Named ACC Player of the Week for the second time in his career, Jones began the week with 26 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and a career-best six assists in Tech’s 111-108 win over Clemson. He hit six of eight shots from the field and 14 of 19 free throws.
He followed with 26 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks in the Yellow Jackets’ win over Florida State. He connected on eight of 11 attempts from the field and 10 of 15 from the foul line. The double-double was the 27th of Jones’ career, tops among all active ACC players.
Four post players trying to guard Jones fouled out in the two games.
Lewis averaged 12 points while shooting 64 percent (7-11) from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
The 6-3 swingman from Germantown, Md., scored 13 points in the Yellow Jackets’ 111-108 win over the Tigers. He hit five of seven attempts from the field, including three of Tech’s school-record 17 three-pointers. His biggest basket, however, was a two-pointer. After Clemson had pulled within one point, 105-104, his baseline jumper with 1:02 to play helped seal the win.
Lewis, who has won the Rookie award more times than any other ACC freshman, added 11 points, three steals and two assists in Tech’s 77-68 win over the Seminoles.
Lewis and fellow Yellow Jacket freshman Halston Lane have combined to win the ACC Rookie of the Week award six of the 11 weeks of the season.
