PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – For the second-straight match, Georgia Tech women’s tennis junior Kenya Jones defeated her opponent in three sets to advance in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. With Thursday’s main draw win, Jones will play in the round of 16 on Friday.
“Kenya had another tough match today where the momentum shifted a lot,” associate head coach Christy Lynch said. “Her opponent came out ready to play. Kenya did a good job of fighting back and taking the first set in the tiebreaker. Despite playing a bad second set, Kenya stayed confident in the third and played a very solid set to take the match.”
Jones faced conference foe Alle Sanford of North Carolina in the opening round of main draw action on Thursday. The opponents took the court late due to match delays, but once the foes took the court, it was a battle to the final point.
Jones captured the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (3), but fell in the second set, 6-0. Jones regrouped in the third set and raced out to a 4-1 lead. She sealed the match win, claiming the final set, 6-3.
Two rounds of singles will take place on Friday. Jones will take on Sophie Whittle of Gonzaga at 1:45 p.m. EST in the round of 16 with a chance to play in the quarterfinals.
