Johnson, Barry to Represent Tech in Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge

April 28, 2017

THE FLATS – For the 10th-straight year, Georgia Tech football head coach Paul Johnson and basketball legend Jon Barry will team up to represent the Yellow Jackets in the 11th-annual Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge golf tournament, which is set for Sunday-Wednesday at the Ritz Carlton Resort at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga.

The most successful pairing in the history of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge, Johnson and Barry have won the tournament a record four times (2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015) and finished among the top three teams each of the nine years that they have competed. The duo tied for second place last year at nine-under-par, two strokes behind Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze and former Rebels’ football player Wesley Walls.

A 15-team field of college football head coaches paired with celebrity alums will compete in this year’s Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge. The tournament will be a two-man scramble format, using confirmed handicap adjustments. The Georgia Tech team of Johnson and Barry will tee off alongside TCU head coach Gary Patterson and Hall-of-Fame running back LaDanian Tomlinson for the start of the tournament.

The participants will compete for a first-place prize of $100,000 while all teams will receive a portion of the $630,000 total purse. Prize money will benefit endowed scholarships at the participating institutions and charities of the coaches’ choosing. Johnson’s selected charity is the Georgia Tech Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Johnson and Barry have won $737,500 for the Georgia Tech scholarship fund and their selected charities over the previous nine years. In all, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Challenge has provided $6 million in donations to scholarship funds and charities over its 10-year history.

This year’s event will be recorded and broadcast on ESPN in August and December. Air times will be announced this summer.
