Sept. 13, 2004
ATLANTA–Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson and cross country standout Ann Armsby were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, September 13, 2004.
Johnson, a freshman from Tyrone, Ga., caught three touchdown passes, including two in the final two minutes to lift Georgia Tech to a miraculous 28-24 road win at 18th-ranked Clemson. With Tech trailing 24-14, Johnson hauled in two “jump balls” from Reggie Ball, first from eight yards out with 1:50 left and then the game-winner from 11 yards out with just 11 seconds left. The true freshman also had a spectacular 37-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. He is one of just six Tech players–and the only freshman–to catch three or more touchdowns in a game, and the first since Dez White vs. Virginia in 1998. Johnson finished the game with eight catches for 127 yards.
Armsby, a sophomore from Dacula, Ga., led the Jackets this past weekend at the Georgia State Invitational. She finished seventh amongst Division I racers to capture seventh at the event. Her five-kilometer time of 19:10 marked a personal-best at that distance.
