Johnson Adds Another All-America Award

Dec. 13, 2005

ATLANTA–Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson added another all-America award when he was named to the Associated Press second team Tuesday.

Tech’s sensational sophomore has already been named a first-team all-America by the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) and Rivals.com, and a second-team all-America by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Johnson will lead the 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets (7-4, 5-3 ACC) as they make their ninth straight bowl appearance against Utah in the Emerald Bowl, Dec. 29 at 4:30 p.m. ET in San Francisco, Calif.

The 6-4, 230-pounder from Tyrone, Ga., leads Tech with 52 receptions for 869 yards and six touchdowns.

He was a unanimous first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection this fall, following first-team all-ACC and ACC Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman.

In two-year his career, Johnson has totalled 100 catches for 1,706 yards with 13 receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He already ranks sixth in Tech history in career receiving touchdowns, seventh in receiving yards and 11th in receptions. He has a career average of 17.1 yards per catch.

Johnson is the 48th player in Georgia Tech history to earn first-team selection to at least one nationally-recognized all-America team but the first since offensive tackle Chris Brown in 2000. Johnson is the first Tech receiver to earn all-America recognition of any kind–first, second or third team, since Billy Martin in 1963.
