Jackets Wrap Up Play at Georgia Tech Fall Invitational

Sept. 23, 2007

ATLANTA – Christy Striplin continued her strong start to the season with another singles and doubles sweep to lead the Yellow Jackets on the final day of competition at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational. The Yellow Jacket junior won three singles and three doubles matches while going undefeated in the three-day event.

Georgia Tech won five of six singles matches against players from the University of Georgia on the final day of competition after sweeping all three doubles matches earlier in the afternoon.

“This was a great weekend for our team,” Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton said. “Overall, I’m very pleased with where we are at this point in time. We still have a lot of work to do, but I think that we have great `stuff’ on this team, which was evident this weekend, playing against some good competition.

“Our young players were looking very good, and I expect them to keep getting better. I’m just excited about the rest of the fall and looking forward to the spring. It should be a lot of fun this year.”

Striplin posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Cameron Ellis after teaming with freshman Noelle Hickey to defeat Georgia State’s duo of Mateja Podgorsek and Dariana Kozmina, 8-4, in doubles. Tech also received straight-set singles wins from Amanda McDowell, Maya Johansson and Kirsten Flower Sunday afternoon while Kristi Miller battled for a three-set victory against the Bulldogs’ Kelley Hyndman.

McDowell took home the singles title for the tournament, accumulating the most points of any player in the singles bracket, while the Florida State duo of Ania Rynarzewska and Katie Rybakova captured the doubles title.

Overall, Tech won 19 of its 22 singles matches in the tournament, and seven of 11 doubles matches.

The Jackets will return to action next weekend at the Baylor Invitational and the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
