GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team opened fall competition on Friday with the first day of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic on the campus of Furman University. The Jackets, represented by Valeriya Deminova, Victoria Flores, Kenya Jones and Dalila Said, captured three doubles wins and three singles wins on the opening day.
Two rounds of doubles kicked things off in the morning followed by one round of singles play. Tech paired Jones and Said for their first outing. The doubles tandem dropped the first match, but rebounded winning their second match. Meanwhile, the Tech pair of Deminova and Flores will take on Florida State’s Nandini Das and Ariana Rahmanparast on Saturday morning for the doubles flight 3 title after walking away with a pair of victories on Friday. The Yellow Jacket pair went undefeated on Friday to claim a spot in the championship match.
In singles play, Jones, Flores and Said were all victorious. Both Jones and Flores captured three-set wins, while Said defeated Kennedy Wicker of USC who was forced to retire.
The Jackets will get back in action for day two on Saturday beginning with doubles at 9 a.m. Singles will start at 11:30 a.m. One round of both doubles and singles will take place on Saturday. The tournament will conclude with the final round of singles on Sunday.
