ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving team will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for an Atlantic Coast Conference match-up on Friday, Nov. 7. The Yellow Jackets and Cavaliers will do battle at 2 p.m. in the Aquatic and Fitness Center, the site of the 2004 ACC Championships. Tech will then travel to College Park, Md., for its second ACC match of the weekend against Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 8. That meet will begin at Noon in the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
“It will be a good test for our young athletes going up against Virginia and Maryland,” said head coach Seth Baron. “Virginia has been the dominant team in our conference and they are hosting ACC’s this year, so it will give our athletes a chance to see how the pool swims.
“Maryland will be a great match that could go either way. We should get a better idea of where we stack up after this weekend.”
Leading the Jackets thus far in 2003-04 are sophomore Sam Morgan (Gainesville, Ga.) and freshmen Ryan Bishop (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Vesna Stojanovska (Skopje, Macedonia). Morgan notched two wins at the NC State dual meet on Oct. 25 in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events. Morgan’s times of 4:32.66 and 9:21.66 rank him fifth in the ACC conference. He also ranks 13th in the nation in the 1000 free and 16th in the 500 free.
Bishop captured two victories in his first dual meet for Tech and currently owns the second best time in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.60. Bishop also won the 200 individual medley for the Jackets and ranks third in the league with his time of 1:52.16. He ranks eighth in the nation in the breast and 12th in the 200 IM.
Stojanovska earned three wins in her debut, setting new Georgia Tech records in both the 200 and 1000 free events with times of 1:51.65 and 10:21.52, respectively. She cruised to a three-second victory in her third race of the day, the 500 free, with a time of 5:02.03. Stojanovska ranks fourth in the ACC in the 200 free.
The Rambling Wreck will travel to Athens, Ga., for the UGA Invitational for their next meet. The swimming invitational is scheduled for Dec. 5-7, and will run all day in the Gabrielson Natatorium.
