Jackets Take Sixth, 17th at NCAA South Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s cross country team took sixth and 17th respectively at the NCAA South Regional Championships held at Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of Alabama, Saturday.

D.J. McMillan earned the top spot among Tech runners in his final race as a Yellow Jacket crossing the line in 25th place with a time of 31:51.2. McMillan was named to the NCAA South All-Region team for his top-25 finish.

The top woman to cross was Mary Kownack, who has been pacing the Jackets for the majority of the year with a 71st place finish in 22:21.6.

All of the men’s runners finished in the top-100 in the race that saw 159 competitors.

Following behind McMillan was Shawn Roberts who took 32nd in a time of 32:18.9 and then Patrick Barron who notched a time of 33:00.1 for 54th place. Rounding out the pack was Niall Longobardi (61st place, 33:15.4), Obiandu Igwe (62nd place, 33:15.6), Joe Fulton (79th place, 33:32.2) and Alec Clifford (94th place, 33:44.2).

On the women’s side of things, Kelly Meyer finished behind Kownack in 96th place with a time of 22:58.0 and in third place among Jacket runners was Rachel Hammond who took 107th place with a time of 23:06.8. Rounding out the women’s pack of runners was Maureen McMeekin (120th place, 23:21.1), Katie Townsend (124th place, 23:27.9), Lauren Young (143rd place, 23:53.1) and Katie Vance (23:56.9).

Florida State swept all of the first place honors on the day as both the men’s and women’s squads took home the team wins. The men’s first place finisher was David Forrester who crossed the line in 30:43.3 while the FSU runners went 1-2-3 on the women’s side of things with Amanda Winslow taking home the victory in 20:33.4.

This concludes the cross country season for the Yellow Jackets.
