Six players scored in double figures and the Blue Devils, recapturing their defensive intensity after a home loss toMaryland, defeated turnover-plagued Georgia Tech 84-65 Saturday,February 12.
Duke (19-3, 10-1 ACC) set a record with 31 consecutive regular-season victories in the ACC, a streak that ended Wednesday with a 98-87 loss to the Terrapins at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Chris Carrawell and Nate James scored 15 points apiece to lead Duke, which committed only seven turnovers. By comparison, the Yellow Jackets gave the ball away 21 times, leading to 38 points for the Blue Devils.
Duke took control right away, racing to a 25-10 lead just over eight minutes into the game and maintaining a double-digit margin the rest of the way.
The Blue Devils pushed the margin to as many 19 points before settling for a 45-31 margin at halftime on Mike Dunleavy Jr.’s spinning, twisting shot in the lane just before the buzzer. Tech got no closer than 48-35 and trailed by as many as 27 points.
Georgia Tech was coming off its largest ACC victory in more than four years, a 68-47 rout of Virginia on the same night Duke was losing to Maryland. The Jackets used a zone defense to limit the Cavaliers to 27.6 percent shooting, but the Blue Devils had too many weapons. They shot nearly 50 percent (29-of-60), busting the zone with eight 3-pointers.
Shaun Fein led Tech with 15 points and Jason Collier, with 14, was the only teammate in double figures.
Duke extended its record road winning streak in the ACC to 17 games, and also defeated Georgia Tech for the eighth time in a row. The Yellow Jackets haven’t won in the series since the 1996 season, losing by an average of 19.5 points per game since then.
