Jackets Roll Past Fighting Irish, 6-1

THE FLATS – No. 36 Georgia Tech women’s tennis extended its win streak to five-straight, collecting a 6-1 victory over No. 35 Notre Dame on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets took the doubles point and five singles matches to improve to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

DOUBLES
Georgia Tech captured a competitive doubles point against the Fighting Irish with its top two courts leading the way. In a back-and-forth battle on court one, Tech’s No. 13 doubles pair of Kylie Bilchev and Ava Hrastar stood on serve with Notre Dame’s No. 36 Page Freeman and Maria Olivia Castedo, 4-4. The Jackets held serve to grab a 5-4 advantage and closed out the match, 6-4, to give Tech the edge in doubles play.

With court three on serve at 5-all, eyes turned to court two where No. 12 Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura led 5-3 against Julia Andreach and Meghan Coleman. The Fighting Irish fought off match point to setup a 5-4 tally, but dominated the next game, clinching the early match lead with a 6-4 triumph.

SINGLES
Notre Dame evened the match at 1-all with a win to open singles on court two, but the Yellow Jackets would not drop another match to clinch the victory. Competing on court three, Bilchev gained momentum early, rolling to a 6-0 opening set against Nibedita Ghosh and took a 3-1 lead in the second set. The freshman extended her advantage and pocketed the second set, 6-1, for a 2-1 Georgia Tech match lead.

Finishing seconds later on court three, Mahak Jain cushioned Tech’s lead to 3-1, defeating Carrie Beckman in straight sets. Jain raced out with a 3-0 edge in the first set and grabbed the opener over Beckman, 6-2. She held strong in the second set, winning, 6-2, to put Georgia Tech within reach of victory.

Gia Cohen clinched the match for the Yellow Jackets on court five against Castedo. The Jacket took the first set, 6-4, and opened with a 2-1 lead in the second set. Cohen pushed her lead out to 4-2 and sealed the victory, 6-2, clinching Tech’s fifth-straight victory.

On court six, Sharabura pulled out a three-set win over Coleman, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to setup a 5-1 Tech lead before Lee concluded play in a marathon on court one.

Owning a set lead over Freeman, Lee trailed 6-5 in the second set, but forced a tiebreak at 6-all. The Jacket fought off four set points, pulling out the win in the tiebreak, 13-11.
