Jackets Hold Off Evansville, 7-5

KENNESAW, Ga. – Junior Brittany Barnes drove in three runs and senior Caitlin Lever went 2-for-3 to lead Georgia Tech (5-1) past Evansville (3-1), 7-5, on Sunday in the KSU Softball Invitational at Bailey Park.

Senior Sarah Wood improved to 3-0 on the season, working 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and struck out two. Sophomore Lacey Richardson tallied her first save of the season, throwing the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit, while giving up three unearned runs and struck out three.

Sophomore Whitney Haller went 1-for-3, with a home run (2) and two runs batted in to pace the Yellow Jackets offensively. Senior Kristina Hull, junior Stephanie Butler and sophomore Aileen Morales each had two hits for Tech.

Haller put the Jackets on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run blast to left-center field, her second of the season, to give Tech an early 2-0 lead.

Butler drove in a run for Tech in the top of the second inning with an infield single and two outs to give the Jackets a three-run lead, 3-0.

The Purple Aces got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI triple by Amanda Ockomon to right field as the Jackets’ lead was cut to two runs, 3-1.

Morales drove in a run for the Rambling Wreck in the top of the fourth inning to give Tech a three-run lead for the second time in the game, 4-1.

Barnes hit a triple down the left field line to score three runs in the top of the seventh inning to give Tech a cushion heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning, 7-2.

The Purple Aces benefited from two errors in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring three unearned runs to cut the lead to 7-5 with runners at the corners and two outs. Richardson took matters into her own hands for the final out, recording a put out over to first base to end the game.

Tech scored seven runs, on 13 hits and had three errors, while Evansville scored five runs, on five hits and had one error.

The Jackets will take on Kennesaw State (7-2) later tonight at Bailey Park. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
