Jackets Head to Furman for Debbie Southern Fall Classic

THE FLATS – After inclement weather forced the cancelation of two fall tournaments last weekend, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will kick off the fall schedule at the 32nd annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic, Sept. 21-23. The tournament will take place at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.

The tournament will feature 12 teams in a flighted competition with individual flight champions for singles and doubles. The Jackets will get an early look at tough competition as 11 of the 12 teams were ranked in the top 38 in the final 2018 ITA Collegiate tennis rankings: Vanderbilt (2), North Carolina (3), Duke (4), Georgia Tech (5), Texas (6), South Carolina (12), Florida State (16), Wake Forest (27), Mississippi State (289), Ohio State (33) and Clemson (39). The 12-team field includes 21 singles players ranked in the top 75 and 11 doubles teams ranked in the top 40 in the ITA preseason rankings.

Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, followed by singles action at 1 p.m. Play on Saturday and Sunday will begin at 9 a.m.

The Jackets return four players from last season’s squad that made a run to the NCAA Championship semifinals. Tech finished the season ranked No. 5 nationally and posted a 25-6 overall record. Three newcomers join the roster this season.
