THE FLATS – For its terrific performance in the classroom, Georgia Tech baseball joined 94 Division I programs and just 19 Power 5 programs in earning the 2020-21 American Baseball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Excellence Award, the ABCA announced Thursday.
The ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award is earned by programs that post a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2020-21 academic year.
One of five programs from the Atlantic Coast Conference to receive the award, the Yellow Jackets led all men’s teams at Georgia Tech with a program-record 3.43 team GPA, while also winning their second-straight ACC Coastal Division title. En route to the program-record GPA, Tech had five Jackets selected to the ACC’s All-Academic Team, recording 3.0 GPA’s for the semester while maintaining a 3.0 cumulative GPA as well – Brant Hurter, Tres Gonzalez, Andrew Jenkins, Kevin Parada, and Luke Waddell.
On the field, the Yellow Jackets finished the season ranked No. 22 nationally after finishing 31-25 on the year and 21-15 in the ACC. Georgia Tech earned its 33rd NCAA Regional berth when it traveled to Nashville to battle to the regional final against then-No. 4 national seed Vanderbilt where it fell in extra innings.
