Jackets Drops Match at No. 1 North Carolina

CARRBORO, N.C.– Georgia Tech women’s tennis played its final regular season road match at No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday, falling 7-0 to the Tar Heels. The loss moved Tech to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

DOUBLES
North Carolina grabbed the doubles point and early match lead with victories from the top two positions. The nation’s top-ranked doubles team of Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty finished fist, collecting a 6-0 decision over No. 6 Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura on court one. It was a competitive battle in the early going on court two between Tech’s No. 27 Ava Hrastar and Kylie Bilchev and UNC’s Cameron Morra and Alle Sanford. The Yellow Jackets opened with a 3-2 lead, but the Tar Heels won the next four games to take the match, 6-3, clinching the doubles point for UNC.

On court three, Gia Cohen and Ruth Marsh stood knotted with Reilly Tran and Carson Tanguilig, 5-5, when the point was clinched and play was suspended.

SINGLES
UNC carried momentum into singles action, clinching the victory with the first three singles matches to finish. On court four, Crawley edged Mahak Jain, 6-0, 6-0, before Scotty defeated Hrastar on court two, 6-0, 6-4, to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. Anika Yarlagadda clinched the match from court six as the Tar Heel picked up a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Rosie Garcia Gross.

The Yellow Jackets split sets on the final three courts. Competing on court three, Bilchev pushed Tran to a super tiebreak, trading the first two sets. After Tran took the opener, 6-1, Bilchev won the second set, 6-3, but the Tar Heel held in the tiebreak, 10-7, to take the win.

Facing Tanguilig on court five, Cohen dropped the first set, 6-3, but forced a super tiebreak winning the second set, 7-6 (3). Cohen fought hard in the final tiebreak, but Tanguilig held strong, 10-5. UNC completed the sweep, winning on court one. Morra and Lee split the first two sets, 6-3, 3-6, but Morra pulled out the super tiebreak, 10-7, to account for the final 7-0 score.

Georgia Tech returns to the Ken Byers Tennis Complex this weekend to play its final two regular season matches. The Yellow Jackets host Virginia Tech and Virginia on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
