THE FLATS – For the second time this weekend, Georgia Tech women’s tennis swept singles play to respond from dropping the doubles point, collecting a 6-1 victory over No. 25 Syracuse on Sunday. Tech’s second consecutive victory improved the Yellow Jackets to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
DOUBLES
Syracuse took the doubles point in quick fashion, dropping only three games to pick up wins on courts two and three. The Orange grabbed a 6-1 decision on court three before clinching the doubles point from court two, 6-2, gaining the early 1-0 match lead.
SINGLES
Georgia Tech responded in singles play once again, grabbing all first sets and sweeping singles action to clinch the match. Carol Lee wrapped up first, taking a convincing win on court one over Zeynep Erman, 6-1, 6-2, to notch her 20th overall singles victory this season and improve to 11-2 at No. 1 in dual play. Kate Sharabura put the Yellow Jackets in the lead for the first time, taking a dominating 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ines Fonte on court six, putting Tech in front, 2-1.
Competing on court four, Alejandra Cruz gave Tech a 3-1 match lead when the Jacket downed Miyuka Kimoto, 6-3, 6-0. After standing on serve at 2-all in the first set, Cruz would win 10 of the next 11 games to pocket the match in straight-sets.
Kylie Bilchev clinched the match for the Yellow Jackets from court two, sealing the match at 4-1. Bilchev faced Viktor Kanapatsaya and dropped only three games to pocket a 6-2, 6-1 triumph and improve to 6-1 in ACC play.
With the match clinched, Georgia Tech extended its lead when Rosie Garcia Gross downed Shiori Ito, 6-3, 6-0, pushing her win streak to three-straight matches, and Mahak Jain concluded play on court three, winning the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (10-8), against Polina Kozyreva. Syracuse led 4-3 in the second set before she retired due to injury.
