Jackets Down NC State Volleyball, 3-1

RALEIGH, N.C. – Chrissy DeMichelis led the Yellow Jackets with 17 kills and Michelle Kandell added 27 digs to lead Georgia Tech to its 15th-straight win over NC State, 3-1 (30-16, 30-23, 27-30, 30-24), Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Gymnasium. With the victory, Tech improved to 8-4 on the season and 2-0 in the ACC, while NC State drops to 3-10, 0-2.

Middle hitters Callie Miller and Erin Birmingham combined to hit .419 while each posted four total blocks on the afternoon. Miller recorded 11 kills and hit .429 while Birmingham had six kills and hit .400 against the Wolfpack.

Lindsey Gray posted her second double-double of the weekend, and fourth of the season, by recording 11 kills and 12 digs to go along with four service aces and an assist.

Talisa Kellogg was the only other Yellow Jacket in double figures, as the junior outside hitter had 10 kills in addition to six digs and four total blocks.

Tech cruised to a 30-16 win in game one behind the strong hitting of Ulrike Stegemann, who had five kills and just one error on 12 attempts (.333), while the Wolfpack managed just eight kills while committing seven attack errors as a team.

DeMichelis recorded six kills and Gray added five more to lead the Jackets to a 30-23 win in the second game. After the Wolfpack took a 12-9 lead using a 6-0 run early in the game, Tech responded by winning 17 of the next 22 points before earning the seven-point win.

After being shutout in four-consecutive conference matches dating back to last season, the Wolfpack earned a 30-27 win over the Yellow Jackets in game three behind Chrissy Zirpolo, who hit .545 with seven kills and just one error on 11 attempts in the frame.

Zirpolo led the Wolfpack with 17 kills in addition to 16 digs against the Yellow Jackets.

Trailing 12-9 early in game four, the Yellow Jackets used an 11-3 run to take control of the final game, and held on for a 30-24 win.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action next weekend when they host Virginia and Virginia Tech in the ACC home opener at O’Keefe Gym. Tech squares off with the Cavaliers Friday at 7 p.m. before meeting the Hokies Saturday at 8 p.m. Both matches can be heard on WREK Radio (91.1 FM/www.wrek.org) while live stats will be available at www.ramblinwreck.com.
