CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior Eric Massey tallied a NCAA Region qualifying mark of 184 feet, 4 inches, in the men’s hammer throw to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Orange & Purple Classic on Saturday.
Freshman Mellany Stanislaus finished first in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, 6 inches, for the Yellow Jackets. Freshman April Phillips tallied a first-place finish in the women’s shot put with a mark of 46 feet.
Senior Nico Shaner posted a mark of 196 feet, 9 inches, to finish runner-up in the men’s javelin throw for the Jackets.
Sophomore Shantia Moss finished second in the women’s 100-meter high hurdles with a NCAA Region time of 13.45. Junior Fatmata Fofanah finished fourth with a NCAA Region time of 13.71 for Tech.
Senior Misty Dirksen finished second in the women’s 800 meters with a time of 2:12.07. Junior Ashlee Kidd clocked a time of 24.10 in the women’s 200-meter dash to finish in third place for the Jackets.
Senior Jewel Welch finished second in the women’s discus with a mark of 155 feet, 2 inches, for Tech. Freshman Kimery Hern finished fourth with a mark of 153 feet, 9 inches.
Redshirt freshman Andy Powlen finished third in the men’s discus with a personal-record mark of 162 feet, 7 inches.
Freshmen Matt DiDia and E.C. Gibbs posted fourth-place finishes for the Jackets in the men’s 400-meter dash and 1500 meters. Gibbs finished with a time of 48.74, while Gibbs crossed the finish line with a time of 1:53.06.
Senior Chase Sasser tallied a fifth-place finish in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 15 feet, 1 inch. Freshman Mario Johnson finished fifth in the men’s 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a lifetime-best time of 52.78.
The Yellow Jackets will host the Georgia Tech Invitational, May 12-13, at the Griffin Track. The meet is free admission.
