Jackets Battle but Fall to No. 14 North Carolina 4-3

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (5-9, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) got wins from Jose Muguruza and Eric Molnar at the first and second singles spots respectively, but the team fell 4-3 to No. 14 North Carolina at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Friday.

The Tar Heels (13-0, 1-0 ACC) struck first by winning the doubles point when No. 62 Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney defeated Jordan DeLass and George Gvelesiani, 9-7, from the third spot. The Carolina team of Lenny Gullan and David Stone beat Eric Molnar and Luke Rassow-Kantor, 8-5, in the first spot for the Heels first doubles win. The Jackets picked up a victory as Muguruza and Scott Blackmon knocked off No. 62 Stefan Hardy and Sebastian Guejman, 8-7 (7-4), from the No. 2 doubles slot.

In singles play, freshman Rassow-Kantor dropped his match 6-2, 6-2, to Taylor Fogleman in the fifth spot to give UNC a 2-0 lead. North Carolina jumped ahead 3-0, when Sebastian Guejman defeated senior Zach Rath 6-4, 6-3, in the four spot. Muguruza pulled the Jackets back within two when he defeated No. 46 Benjamin Carlotti 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, in a three-set thriller.

Junior Scott Blackmon gave Tech its second win of the day, when he closed out his match over Karl Wishart in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, from the sixth spot. Chris Kearney clinched the match for Carolina, when he defeated Jordan DeLass 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), at the fourth spot.

Senior Eric Molnar also played three sets, as he defeated Stefan Hardy 7-6, 2-6, 7-5, to close out the day.

The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team continues its weekend homestand this Sunday against another ACC foe, No. 17 Duke, beginning at 1 p.m. as part of a Georgia Tech tennis doubleheader. The women’s team is hosting No. 15 Florida State beginning at 10 a.m. The team will also be having free barbeque for fans attending Sunday’s matches.
